Ginger powder is used in several spice mixes used in everyday cooking and ayurvedic medications. Store-bought powders cannot compete with the freshness and hygiene of homemade powders. You may now easily make this homemade ginger powder.

This freshly ground ginger or sonth powder has an amazing smell and flavour. Give this a try once and we are sure you are not going back to the grocery store version anytime soon.

There are two options to make this ginger powder. One is to spread the grated ginger on a newspaper or kitchen towel for 2-3 days and dry it in the sun. But what if you don’t have time and need something right away? In this instance, you can use a convection oven. We are showing the oven method of making sonth powder.

Health Benefits of homemade ginger powder

Ginger adds taste to the dish and has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Some of ginger’s potential therapeutic uses are listed below:

Relieves Stomach Discomfort

An unsettled stomach can be both bothersome and painful. Ginger has anti-inflammatory characteristics. It assists to neutralise digestive secretions while also stimulating food digestion and absorption and removing excess gas from the intestinal tract.

Enhances Metabolism

Dried ginger powder includes thermogenic substances that aid in fat loss. Regular use of ginger powder may truly aid to enhance your metabolism and burn off excess fat, so assisting you in losing weight. To aid in weight loss, include ginger in your daily diet.

Treatment for the common cold

Combine ginger powder with jaggery and ghee. Make small balls. Take one every day to treat or prevent a cold.

How to use homemade ginger powder

  • If you are a fan of baking, then make gingerbread cookies or eggless christmas fruit cake using homemade ginger powder.
  • Use it to make a variety of spice powders.
  • Prepare ginger tea. To make the tea, add a pinch of dry ginger powder to a bowl with a cup of boiling water. If you prefer, you can sweeten it with honey. This is also a great home remedy for cough and cold. You can even add it to your regular masala chai.
  • Add it to Raab. It’s a traditional Gujarati sweet warm drink made with whole wheat flour and jaggery.

Wash the ginger well. Peel them.

Grate the ginger using a grater. You can also use a food processor grater or chopper attachment.

Spread the grated ginger on a baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at 140 degrees for 60-70 minutes. Divide the grated ginger between two dishes if it does not fit in one tray or plate. Mix once after 30 minutes.

Check after an hour. If you feel the mixture is not dried, bake for a few more minutes. Let this cool down completely.

Once cooled, place the dried ginger in a mixer or blender jar and grind it into a fine powder. You can grind it in batches.

Sift once through a sieve to get rid of any threads.

Store the homemade ginger powder in an air-tight container. You can store it in the refrigerator for 12 months.

Tips & Tricks

  • Soak the ginger in water for 5 minutes before washing it under running water. Wipe away any dirt using a cloth.
  • If you feel the oven temperature is a bit high then, you can reduce it further. But make sure not to bake it at a temperature higher than 140 degrees.
  • After grinding the powder, do not immediately store in it the container. Let it cool down and then store it in the container to prevent moisture.
  • Make sure the ginger is totally dry before grinding otherwise it will take more time to dry.
